I think Rex is trying to make himself out as more of a hero than he really is. He then tells his daughter that she doesn’t need to worry anymore, and that she is safe now. He dramatically takes her from the hospital room, and runs down the hall and through an emergency exit, ignoring the nurses who were yelling at him to stop. After being in the hospital for more than 6 weeks, her father, Rex Walls, tells his daughter that they are going to go home now, in “Rex Walls,” style. In the first chapter of the novel, Walls tells a story about how she was burnt badly as her dress caught fire from the stove at age 3.
